Perceiving the Poet

Read between the invisible lines That give inspiration with lyrical beauty And blind force with accomplished shape Hear the devilish laughter Nursed on the ebony breast of night Dance around me in chaotic choreography See the ocean of bitterness That is drowning my ability To gather stares from every human face Stay locked and frozen on each eye As my outward soul does cry Divided with but half a heart Hear the winds dispel the heavens wrath in vain And the lullabies composed from loss and despair Feel the tears that fall from my cold dead eyes Streaming, straying, flying, fading Taste my horror of knowing who and what I am And the unique understanding of detached loneliness Catch glimpses of the terrors in the night That speak to me with silent hatred An absent father An uninvited friend And another lover’s past Meet the ghosts that haunt my dreams Rise and vanish in oblivious host Watch my life as a prisoner condemned to die Pass through the shadows of a crumbling wall Reach for me beneath the earth with skeletal hands And cherish the sacred blood of a poet now forgotten
