Grand Snow across the French Alps

There has been about 1.5m of snow during the last week. It has been so prolonged that skiing lifts have been shut down, the funicular has been stopped at Chamonix’s train staion and not going onwards to Argentiere. Several roads have been blocked and avalanche announcements published.

Contrast this to a couple of winter seasons ago, with the unusually hot January weather conditions, rocks appearing on the mountainsides, and warnings that climate change could mean the death of skiing in France. The OECDs study from 2006 warned that global warming could make ski holidays far too expensive for many snowboarders, with a third of ski fields shutting and the melting of alpine glaciers. Scientists assert that it’s virtually impossible to attribute the annual deviations in the snow conditions to the consequences of global warming.

We may have the worst downturn in almost 30 years, and the Pound has plummeted to new levels compared to the euro, but the snow is fine, and the latest reservations highlight that people are eager to revel in the fine skiing conditions with our ski accommodation taken. It is undoubtedly the finest in eight winter seasons, and many are saying it is the finest skiing snow in at least ten seasons.

Notwithstanding recollect that snow like this means significant avalanches risks.
